About Fernando Serrano

I’m Fernando Serrano, a queer Mexican-American artist from Naco, Sonora, currently based in Bisbee, Arizona. My work explores the intersections of identity, tradition, and borderland life - reclaiming and reimagining ancestral techniques through a contemporary, experimental lens.

I was born in Arizona, raised in Sonora, and have always lived between languages, cultures, and landscapes. That liminality deeply informs my art practice. I work primarily in fine metals, fiber, ceramics, and printmaking, often combining traditional Mexican methods with a modern aestetic. Through my brand, Queen of the Rodeo, and my community arts project, Border Loomers, I seek to tell stories of survival, transformation, and queer joy rooted in the borderlands.

I’m an active and proud member of Central School Project, where I help coordinate the Community Printmaking Studio and facilitate inclusive, bilingual workshops. I'm currently building a library of fiber arts books and materials to share with others - because I believe that cultural knowledge should be lived, shared, and constantly evolving.

My work honors the hands that came before mine and the communities that shape it.

Fernando Serrano (b. 1993) is a queer Mexican-American artist and cultural worker based in Bisbee, Arizona. He lives with his husband, two loyal hound dogs, and a mysterious black cat in a home full of color, dreams, and ideas. An active and proud member of Central School Project (CSP), Fernando is deeply committed to community-building through accessible artmaking and mutual support.

Fernando is known for his generosity of spirit and skill - often volunteering to photograph artwork for fellow artists in town to ensure quality documentation is not limited to the elite. He frequently helps peers build websites and navigate digital platforms, acting as a bridge between artists and the wider public. With a background in retail and an intuitive sense for storytelling, Fernando has a gift for connecting people with art in meaningful, joyful ways.

His artistic practice is rooted in printmaking, textiles, ceramics, metalsmithing, and experimental processes, and he believes strongly in the preservation and evolution of traditional craft. Whether developing new community programs or diving into ancestral traditions, Fernando centers inclusivity, collaboration, and joy in everything he does. Much of his community engagement is unpaid or donation-based - because he believes art should be a shared resource, not a luxury.

When he’s not making or mentoring, Fernando is one half of the vocals and synths in his band △III "Cone 3", a music project inspired by ceramics, alchemy, and sonic experimentation. Music, like visual art, is a space of connection and creativity for him.

Fernando’s work - and his life - s a patchwork of community care, radical accessibility, and fearless creativity.
